Synopsis

Spike Lee's powerful, gritty film set in Brooklyn''s Bedford Stuyvesant community, reawakened the discussion of race in mainstream American cinema and opened the doors for many future black filmmakers. The movie follows the residents of the neighborhood on the hottest day of the year, as tensions rise around a white-owned pizza parlor, eventually leading to violence. A landmark film, bursting with visual and sonic energy. Lee and Danny Aiello top a fine cast that includes Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Giancarlo Esposito, Robin Harris, Samuel L. Jackson, Bill Nunn, Rosie Perez and John Turturro. Spike Lee---USA---1989---120 mins.

One could argue that this is a top-notch film on any number of fronts: the casting, the setting, the music, the bravery of content and performance, the all-too-true, tragic depiction of racism. I really mean it.

I don't understand Spike Lee's choice in clothing or decor. It looked almost like a musical with made-up costumes. I am missing the director's point of view. It could be a spoof which throws off the mask at the end. Don't know.
