Synopsis

Michael Redgrave stars in this spine-tingling movie featuring dreams, premonitions, hallucinations and some well-timed comic breathers. Redgrave is feverishly convincing in the role of the ventriloquist who achieves the ultimate in schizophrenia. "The five set pieces in this classic British horror anthology still echo throughout today's pop culture...The other ghost stories--especially those involving a mirror that reflects the past, and the man whose nightmares are coming true--are almost as chilling; but it''s the puppet show that still spooks, no matter how many times it''s been ripped off" Robert Hamer/Basil Dearden/Charles Crichton/Alberto Cavalcanti---Great Britain- --1945---104 mins.

A fearful and skittish man with uncanny premonitions serves as a catalyst for supernatural story telling session among fireside guests that leaves a psychoanalyst, who clings to his disbeliefs, out. The vulnerable seeming stranger fears something dreadful will happen. The twist is that when it happens, it is not a matter of premonition but will, and the supernatural gives way to the ordinary as the true staging of horror, an ordinary that manages to represent life as an eternal circular nightmare replete with anxiety, guilt and amnesia. This film teaches about the genre of horror as well as entertains.
