Synopsis

Sacha Baron Cohen took his misogynistic, xenophobic Kazakh TV reporting character from Da Ali G Show out of dorm rooms and into first-run theaters in Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. Part improvisation, part scripted action (i.e. Borat attacking Pamela Anderson), and all boldly bizarre satire, this hilarious documentary of sorts shows Americans to be either friendly ignoramuses or intelligent jerks--and nothing in between. For a film that stirred up this much courtroom controversy and critical praise, you shouldn't expect any courtesies or compromises. Directed by Larry Charles (Curb Your Larry Charles---USA---2006---84 mins.

Offensive. Of course that's a matter of taste. I'll concede that some offensive material can be clever and subtle. Borat is neither. It's about as subtle as Judy whacking Punch over the head with her broom. And how did :Bob Barr, Alan Keyes, Pamela Anderson and a host of lesser lights get roped into appearing in Borat? Their agents must have been asleep at the switch.

One of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time. Ali G isn't some one that I would normally find funny. But this is definitely in the top 20 or 30 funny movies of all time
