Synopsis

One of the most original horror films of recent years and one of the biggest success stories in the history of independent film. A pseudo-documentary that makes a virtue of its extremely low budget, The Blair Witch Project has an almost irresistible premise: Three student filmmakers disappear in the woods of a small Maryland town while filming a documentary project about the local legend of the Blair Witch. The students are never found, but their terrifying footage is located and that is what the audience is supposed to be watching. Shot on 16mm film and video in deliberately amateurish hand-held style, the film was convincing enough that at initial festival screenings some viewers thought it was a real documentary. Includes footage not used in the Daniel Myrick/Eduardo Sanchez---USA---1999---87 mins.

This movie received a lot of hype on its initial theatrical release for its commercial success on a shoestring budget. Good concept and some fantastic sound work but I was absolutely dizzy after staring at the screen for 90 minutes. The hand-held camera was appropriate for the material but the endless bickering amongst the characters was tiring. The suspense level was good, if, again, wearing thin. I wanted more active strange events to present themselves in daylight but maybe that's what the narrative was doing with the disintegration of the group dynamic--in and of itself strange and strained. Good graphic quality overall. Sound was the strongest element.

Just looking at the cover of this movie send chills up my spine. I only saw The Blair Witch Project recently, having assumed it was overrated and outdated. I was dead wrong. Even ten years later, with countless films made in the hand-held camera style Blair Witch made infamous, the suto-documentary remains original and downright horrifying. The amateur filmmakers involved knew what Spielberg learned accidentally during the production of Jaws-- that the scariest thing you can show an audience is their own imagination. Considerable parts of the movie are in complete darkness, with nothing but screaming to suggest what may be occurring in the night. The final few frames of the film are so suspenseful that I literally screamed out, "NO" when the credits rolled in. One of the most terrifying films ever made, The Blair Witch Project is a modern classic and a must-see.
