Synopsis

Internationally acclaimed, the staggering newsreel-like authenticity of the staged street riots and vital performances of the actors give Battle of Algiers a unique dramatic impact on this detailing of the Algerian revolt against the French. Winner of the Golden Lion at the 1965 Venice International Film Festival. "Probably the most emotionally stirring revolutionary epic since Eisenstein's Potemkin (Pauline Kael). In French/Arabic with Gillo Pontecorvo---Italy---1967---125 mins.

The naturalistic documentary style seems as fresh as it must have felt a half century ago, when the movie was released. There are no stereotypical Arabs or French officers, and the movie presents an anti colonial perspective without descending into tiresome agitprop. This is great, timeless art.

Fast paced, hard-hitting, disturbing, thought provoking, one of best docudramas ever.
