Synopsis

Eddie Constantine is Lemmy Caution, inter-galactic private eye, in this bravura mix of comic strip, science fiction and film noir in what is ultimately a new style of cinema in which form and content are identical. Lemmy sets out to dispose of diabolical scientist Leonard von Braun (a.k.a. Leonard Nosferatu) from Alphaville, the futuristic city run by an electronic brain, where love has been banished. A film in which poetry mixes freely with pulp to create a new dimension, a new cinematic reality. In French with Jean-Luc Godard---France---1965---100 mins.

This would have been much more interesting when it was released in 1965. But it's still a classic. Truly a Big Brother scenario, as another reviewer mentioned. (And definitely a bad Big Brother.) But this BB has serious flaws, despite being based on a supposedly purely logical system. Interesting deficiencies that allow the 1930's-style detective/spy to take unexpected actions.

It was different. French existential angst, disguised as "spy, noir". Big brother political system controls our lives and is ( I think) bad. This film should be watched in a group setting, preferably with wine, some herb superb, and munchies. It wil generate a lively discussion. Richard
