When novelist Beth (Julia Louis-Dreyfus, channeling Elaine Benis, so....awesome!) overhears her therapist husband Don (Tobias Menzies, affecting a nebulous American accent) admitting he doesn't like her latest book, hard feelings ensue. Meanwhile, Don is having issues with some of this patients who don't feel they're getting their money's worth (one couple played by real-life marrieds David Cross and Amber Tamblyn are a riot!), and their son Elliot (Owen Teague) is going through a bit of a quarter-life crisis, torn between his dead-end job at a weed store and working on his own writing. And Beth's interior designer sister Sarah (heroically underplaying [and underappreciated IMO] Michaela Watkins) and her actor husband Mark (a manic Arian Moayed) are having their own career crises to boot. Very much in the tradition of Woody Allen's 1970s -- 1990s Manhattan-set comedies, YHMF really knocks it out of the park! I have to admit, I didn't expect to like it as much as I did but writer/director Nicole Holofcener knows how to write very real dialogue as well as direct a pitch perfect cast. The only difference between this film and Woody's films of yesteryear is the setting; NYC now is so blah compared to previous decades. An unexpected delight. B
