Synopsis

In writer-director Katsuhito Ishii's playful, surreal family drama, viewers are introduced to the Haruno family in a series of paced vignettes set in a small town in the Japanese countryside. Each family member--mom the animator, dad the hypno-therapist, a grandfather, a visiting uncle, a lovelorn teenage boy, and his younger sister--has an odd conflict to resolve, the most bizarre being young Sachiko (Maya Banno) and her struggle to master the horizontal bar in order to get a giant version of herself to stop following her. It''s strange to us, but commonplace in the world of the Harunos. "Ishii, best known here for his anime segment in Kill Bill Vol. 1, has the live-action patience and light touch of Rohmer, garlicked up with a buoying sense of acceptable absurdity" (Village Voice). In Japanese with English subtitles. Katsuhito Ishii---Japan---2004---143 mins.
