Synopsis

An exquisitely crafted romantic drama that explores a love triangle in a provincial Chinese village during the 1940's. Beautifully shot by Mark Lee Ping-bing (Wong Kar-wai''s In the Mood for Love and Hou Hsiao-hsien''s The Puppet Master), the film patiently unfolds the story of a sickly ma n and his wife whose eight-year marriage has left them both unfulfilled and distant. The arrival of an old friend at their estate re-ignites a forgotten passion in the wife and raises tensions amongst the trio. Winner of the San Marco Prize at the 2002 Venice International Film Festival. "One of the best films of the year" (Richard Corliss, Time). In Mandarin with English Tian Zhuangzhuang---China---2002---116 mins.
