Synopsis

During the height of the Great Depression, musicians from around the globe converge on Winnipeg, Canada for a contest given by a legless beer baroness (Isabella Rossellini) to determine which country possesses "the saddest music in the world." Known for his string of strangely nostalgic masterpieces, Guy Maddin again pulls out all of his tricks to replicate the sights and sounds of cinema past, while infusing them with an undeniably unique and personal vision. Rossellini is perfect and Kids in the Hall alum Mark McKinney delivers a fine performance as an American theatrical producer determined to win the honors. Co-stars Maria de Medeiros, Ross McMillan and David Fox.

Guy Maddin---Canada---2004---99 mins.
