Synopsis

Ken Takakura, a veteran of dozens of films sometimes referred to as "the Japanese Clint Eastwood," won Best Actor honors at the Montreal World Film Festival for his moving portrayal of an aging railroad attendant. The once thriving mining town he lives and works in is quietly dying and the railway station is scheduled to be closed. Stoically braving the winter cold and an uncertain future, he is haunted by memories of the wife and daughter he lost years ago. In Japanese with English & Korean subtitles.
Yasuo Furuhata---Japan---1999---110 mins.

Interesting subject and remote location. A man who so closely identifies himself with his work that he is blocked from anything short of total dedication. He is undeterred by the emotional needs of family members or the logic of friends. He will not adjust to changing circumstances, intending to "stay" a railroad man forever, even if there is no longer a railroad on which to work! Unhealthy, you say? But it seems the film works hard (even resorting to fantasy) to push us to a different judgment. Didn't work so well for me.
