Synopsis

One of the most original and exhilarating works of recent cinema, Les Amants du Pont-Neuf is as daring as it is dazzling--taking the viewer from gritty, docudrama-styled depictions of homeless life to the most whimsical moments of romantic fantasy. Juliette Binoche and Denis Lavant star as two unlikely lovers who celebrate and suffer with equal abandon. Director Leos Carax's massive set, duplicating the famous Pont Neuf and much of its surroundings, helped make this one of the most expensive films in French history, but the movie is ultimately more intimate than epic. "... could be the great urban expressionist fantasy of the 90s: like Sunrise and Lonesome in the ''20s and Playtime and Alphaville in the ''60s" (Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader). In French with English Leos Carax---France---1991---126 mins.
