Synopsis

Primitive, subversive, and energetic, Sam Fuller's legacy as one of the most idiosyncratic American directors is set in stone. His first three independent films included here jump from westerns to war film, but yield the same violent and emotional results. Fuller''s complex sensibility was already evident in his first feature, I Shot Jesse James (1949, 81 mins.). This dark, psychological western concentrates on what led to Bob Ford''s (John Ireland) decision to kill his former comrade, the notorious outlaw Jesse James (Reed Hadley). In The Baron of Arizona (1950, 95 mins.), Vincent Price is a land office clerk who marries an orphan girl (Ellen Drew) after persuading th e government that she''s an Arizona heiress. Lastly, in what film historian Davi d A. Cook calls "simply the best domestic feature about the Korean War," The Steel Helmet (1951, 84 mins.) stars Gene Evans as a gritty sergeant who''s seen it all and is determined that his men make it out alive. Some sequences were read as anti-American, landing Fuller on the FBI''s radar during the McCarthy era. None of this affected his major studio achievements to come. Sam Fuller---USA---1949-1951---262 mins.
