Synopsis

Danny Boyle's entry in the sci-fi canon is intense, smartly referential, and does not privilege the special effects over the humanity in Alex Garland''s script. The year is 2057, and the sun is dying. After the failure of the first Icarus project, it''s up to Robert Capa (Cillian Murphy) and the crew of the Icarus II (Rose Byrne, Chris Evans, Michelle Yeoh, Cliff Curtis and Hiroyuki Sanada) to deposit a stellar bomb the size of Manhattan into the heart of the great star. Allusions to genre films are present but never winking, such as Solaris, Dark Star, Alien, Event Horizon, Armageddon and, most importantly, 2001: A Space Odyssey. If 2001 was "the ultimate trip," Sunshine is certainly the penultimate. Experts took issue with some of the movie''s scientific logic, but Vivian Sobchack''s essay in Fil m Comment spells out exactly why Danny Boyle wins: He''s trying to affect viewers with the same sense of awe that we can only imagine comes from sta ring straight into the sun from the vacuum of space. Also, there''s a monster. Danny Boyle---Great Britain---2007---107 mins.
