Four poetic masterworks by filmmaker Jean Vigo are collected in this essential set. Includes the subversive social critique/travelogue contrasting different ways of life in Nice (with a keen eye for blatant inequity), A Propos de Nice (1930, 23 mins.); the exercise in camera techniques, with French national swimming champion Jean Taris as the subject, Taris (1931, 11 mins.); the revolutionary portrait of a revolt at a boarding school, Zero de Conduite (1933, 44 mins.); and the high water mark of French poetic realism, L'Atalante (1934, 85 mins.). French with English subtitles.

Jean Vigo---France---1929-34---163 mins.

Boy marries girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back. In the meantime eccentric deckhand causes disruption. Not much of a plot and since a good part of the story takes place on a barge there isn't much variety in setting. Nevertheless, almost a perfect movie. Michel Simon probably played not so lovable nut cases better than any other actor who ever lived. (See Boudu saved from drowning.)

The quintessential French film, complete with love, jealousy, and surreal landscapes. A great starter film for those new to European Cinema.
