Synopsis

Written by notable puzzle aficionados Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins, this clever who-dunnit set on a yacht includes plenty of wicked humor to go along with the mystery. On the anniversary of his wife's mysterious death, a jaded film producer (James Coburn) invites some guests on board his boat for a sinister game of "guess the shameful secret." Also starring James Mason, Dyan Cannon, Ian McShane, Joan Hackett, Raquel Welch and Richard Benjamin. "...a good deal of fun, like one of those tricky, after-dinner party games that always seem dreary in advance but then somehow turn out to be more amusing than one had any right to expect" (Vincent Canby, The New York Times). Herbert Ross---USA---1973---120 mins.

An odd film. It starts off as a kind of social satire of the Hollywood set, but then becomes a murder mystery, with Sleuth-like twists and turns that occur mostly in conversation. Enjoyable but not particularly engrossing. Why didn't Joan Hackett do more films? She was the best of the bunch here.

Better than average mystery set on a yacht. Good acting all around. You will enjoy this film.
