Synopsis

This box-office busting horror flick from South Korea takes the slapstick excess of Kung Fu Hustle and throws it at Godzilla's exoskeleton. A giant, slimy, shape-shifting creature rises from the Han River and attacks an onlooking mass, seizing a young girl, Hyun-seo (Ko Ah-sung), and plunging back into the depths. The government tries to quarantine the victims by claiming the monster is carrying a virus unleashed by the American military. Nevertheless, Hyun-seo''s family escapes and embarks on a quest to save her...or what''s left of her. "Establishing a galumphing tone of carnivalesque terror that trumps just about everything to follow, this picnic panic is a comic replay of 9/11 or even Sergei Eisenstein''s "Odessa Steps" (J. Hoberman, Village Voice). Also known as Gwoemul. In Korean and English wi th Bong Joon-Ho---South Korea---2006---119 mins.

The delicious creature in this film is straight out of 1950’s American and Japanese sci-fi movies. It is essentially an oversized salamander with wicked mandibles in the front and a usefully prehensile tail in the back. Gliding gracefully below the surface of Seoul’s Han River or swinging acrobatically beneath bridges, it inspires both awe and terror. On land, where it is rather less agile and even capable of a pratfall, it can also seem a bit droll. Between the run-for-your-life segments we see a family of mismatched personalities come together to save one of its own (a child kidnapped by the beast). We see also that parental love, even if the parent (Song Kang-ho) is a narcoleptic dolt, is a supremely powerful force. And overlaying the run-for-your-life and save-our-poor-child segments is a cautionary tale about governmental duplicity. This is a thoroughly offbeat film with a whacky sensibility and a nicely modulated sense of humor. From beginning to end it’s great fun.

One of the best movies i've ever seen in my life, The Host is a mesmerizing, beautiful, unforgettable tale of family, fear, and government. Not to be missed, is one more proof of the geniality, excellency, and power of Korean cinema nowadays.
