Synopsis

US history is written in blood. The docu-drama Bisbee '17 by Robert Greene uses locals to recreate that horrific day when a copper mine deported striking workers to the New Mexican desert . Little has been documented about this event until now.

We Americans teld to bury unpleasant history.I live fifteen miles from Honea Path, SC where a textile strike 80 years ago split families and the community, and people still don't talk about it. I had never heard of the Bisbee deportation, and when I read the blurb for Bisbee 17 I was hoping to see a Peter Watkins style indictment. Instead I was presented with an amateurish, meandering film that ended up with "solid citizens" agreeing that an injustice had been committed but that was then and now was now, and while we can understand why the companies and the law were alarmed, we know better now how to deal with such crises.. If you believe that try being a union organizer in South Carolina.
