Synopsis

Long unavailable, this early masterpiece by Olivier Assayas has now been released on Blu-ray by Criterion. Initially commissioned for French TV as part of a series in which directors were asked to make an hour-long film about their teenage years, Assayas decided to make an autobiographical feature instead, which opened at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival. The story follows two teenagers in love, growing up on the outskirts of Paris (Cyprien Fouquet and Virginie Ledoyen), getting in and out of trouble, longing for a different life. A central scene depicts a legendary extended party sequence that includes a lot of the great rock music of Assayas's youth; in fact, the complex negotiation of music rights was one of the main reasons the film was unavailable for so long.
