Pretty graphic, but somehow lacks the wallop that films like Paths of glory, All quiet on the western front, The big parade etc. have Anti-war movie no doubt, but I wondered if Pabst himself believed that the message would sink in when, after the film finished an emphatic "Ende?!" signed everything off. Accompanying television panel in which French and German World War I combat veterans, plus a couple of historians, discussed the film was enlightening. Viewpoints were expressed eloquently and forcefully: the veterans even dared to contradict the historians on at least one point. And their French was so comprehensible that I could understand a goodly portion without having to refer to subtitles.
