Chilean director Pablo Larrain made two films about historical figures in 2016; Jackie, starring Natalie Portman as JFK's widow, and Neruda, about the great Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. The film focuses on the years when Neruda was a Communist senator, and, after publicly criticizing President Videla's brutal anti-Communist repression, is forced to go underground to avoid arrest. A fascist police prefect played by Gael Garcia Bernal plays cat-and-mouse with the poet as the latter writes his epic Canto General.
