Brilliant beautiful little movie with a big heart and big questions about the relationship between life and art. What makes the artist an artist? The result of artistic effort or something more fundamental about the person? How should an artist live? Must he sacrifice all for the sake of his art (as we frequently hear)? The poet Paterson drives a bus in Paterson. He is tied to a place whose name he shares, suggesting that art is nurtured in and sprung from the concreteness of the artist's life. There is something extraordinarily beautiful about a young poet who drives a bus and who doubts/hides his craft and yet who has no real choice but to continue to work it; who loves his wife more than his art; who values her artistic whims more than his own virtuosity, which he denies; who hides his gems in a secret book while the love of his life willingly shares her more meager skills with the whole world. His poetry seems to spring from the very fact that he loves, and because he loves there is always another poem arising in his heart and then appearing on the page. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

Simple, sweet, and profound, like the poems of William Carlos Williams that are this movie's inspiration.
