I had trouble warming up to Scorcese's version. he takes a more leisurely pace than Chinroku did. However, his narrative seemed more straightforward, he emphasized the psychological effects of torture and played up the torment that Rodrigues was enduring more than the Japanese director did. Scoffers will pooh pooh the final scene, but I thought that it was moving. Both versions should be seen together. And, God forgive me , I couldn't help thinking about Donald Trump's program's likely fate when the discussion of Christianity not being able to take root in the "Japanese swamp" came up.
