Synopsis

Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, Winter Sleep is the latest from Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Once Upon A Time In Anatolia). A retired actor has inherited a small hotel in the picturesque Cappadocia region of central Turkey, where he is ensconced with his recently divorced sister, his much younger (and growingly discontented) wife, and a host of guests. A seemingly trivial incident sets in motion a clash of personalities that puts the group at odds, and makes them reflect on the path their lives have taken.

Nuri Bilge Ceylan--Turkey--2014--196 mins.

I do not normally review films from this source, mainly because most had already been heavily reviewed. "Winter Sleep" is the exception, and without mincing words, the film is an absolute delight for those interested in deep conversation about intense subjects, taking place at a place you instantly want to visit, an amazing outpost that appears centuries old, but with all the convenience. I am not sure we would survive a visit, but maybe it would pass uneventfully. The characters could not be better acted, and I could watch these folks for another three hours in the same quietly paced and to most slow manner in which they move. Delightful...

Minor incident balloons into endless talk and much baring of souls. Nothing much happens though. "Chekovian", I thought. Sure enough, when the credits popped Chekov was cited. Held my interest, but I wish that I understood Turkish. I'm sure that I missed a lot.
