Synopsis

Winner of Best Director at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, Mathieu Kassovitz's harsh black-and-white drama of dispossessed urban youth is an unremitting look at the violence, unemployment, and racial hatred that divide the young of contemporary France. Set in a suburb of Paris over the course of 24 hours, the film is remarkable for the verve of its authentic performances and its gritty, realistic feel. Cast includes Vincent Cassel, Hubert Kounde, and Said Taghmaoui. In French with English subtitles.

Paris' poor have lived on the periphery ever since Baron Haussmann p,khgbed boulevards through their slums in the 1850s. What's new is is that the poor are mostly made up of resent immigrants, and that they are confined to soul destroying high rises. Add in isolation from the city and poor job prospects and it's no wonder that youth are alienated, alienation vividly revealed in La haine. One thing that surprised me was the racial and ethnic diversity of the protesters. I thought that the film was sympathetic to the young men's plight, but I didn't fell that the film made them attractive. On the contrary, I found them rude, provocative, confrontational/. I'd go out of my way to avoid them. At the end I felt that the problem was hopeless, intractable.
