Synopsis

Werner Herzog likes dragging things where they don't belong, and to great effect: cannons pulled through the rainforest; a steamboat hoisted over a mountain; Nicolas Cage allowed near a camera. But here, for his latest documentary, Herzog brings a high-definition 3D camera--one of the most hi-tech tools in Hollywood's box--deep into the noxious Chauvet Cave in southern France to photograph some of the oldest cave paintings known to man. He and his small crew capture the 32,000-year-old Paleolithic paintings, rock contours, and surrounding surfaces in detail and in depth. That, along with Herzog's trademark narration, cerebral and comical as ever, makes Cave of Forgotten Dreams an awesome art history lesson...even in 2D. In English, French, and German with English subtitles.

Werner Herzog always finds himself in interesting places with interesting stories. This documentary about stone-age cave paintings recently discovered in France is nicely done, with a good balance between actual footage in the caves and commentary by archaeologists and anthropologists. Herzog overdoes it a bit at the end with his own commentary relating these caves to our modern-day civilization, but overall the movie is worth viewing.

Beautiful documentary. Mind boggling film of paintings over 33,000 years old. Wow! However, we do have to endure a bit of Werner Herzog's self importance. He's the director, narrator, director and editor. He doesn't know quite when to stop. The film time could have been cut by half and it would still be mind boggling. But note, Cave of Forgotten Dreams should still be screened. You won't be disappointed.
