Synopsis

After Margot at the Wedding, writer-director Noam Baumbach convinced Ben Stiller to play a Jewish version of Ethan Hawke's character from Reality Bites--smart, grungy, prickly, narcissistic, and broke. With his college rock days behind him and only an unfulfilling carpentry job in New York City, Roger Greenberg heads to LA to house-sit for his rich brother. Surrounded by young, optimistic, beautiful people, Greenberg has a hard time keeping his "you kids today" bile in check. He has an even harder time when he develops feelings for one of them, his brother's assistant, played excellently by "mumblecore" ingenue Greta Gerwig. At the risk of over simplifying, Greenberg is about an ironic Gen Xer coming to grips with not being as cool as Gen Yers. Similarly, it seems like a 90s indie movie coming to grips with the whole "mumblecore" thing. Self-absorbed, "hipster" couch potato hero: check. Improvised dialog and no-budget visual style: not here. Greenberg is expertly executed, funny and engrossing. Featuring Rhys Ifans and co-writer Jennifer Jason Leigh. Nominated for the Golden Berlin Bear.
