Synopsis

Don Argott directs an impassioned, engaging documentary on the potentially unlawful dismantling of a priceless art collection outside Philadelphia. When the self-made collector Albert C. Barnes died in 1951, his will stipulated that the Barnes Foundation's $25-billion collection of masterpieces by Renoir, Cezanne, Matisse, Van Gogh and others would stay in their suburban locale and far away from the art establishment. But the mayor of Philadelphia and lawyers were able to circumvent that final wish. At the time of filming, parts of the collection were already headed to a tourist-bating, money-making museum in the city. Can the archival footage and talking heads from both sides make a difference in this battle of private rights vs. public good? "Eye-opening...an intellectual crime thriller" (New York Daily News).
