Synopsis

Adapted from the first book in Stieg Larsson's wildly popular mystery trilogy, this grisly sleek thriller follows Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace), a nightmare hacker girl, and Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist), a recently-fired journalist, as they form an unlikely crime-solving team. Mikael is hired to investigate the decade's old disappearance of a rich industrialist's niece, and Salander is hired to keep tabs on him. Along the narrative's savage twists and turns, the pair joins forces to uncover a plot that goes back to Nazi molesters and up through a patriarchal government that is essentially raping its citizens. "The atmosphere of stinking corruption just beneath the veneer of a supposedly progressive society makes this a piece of genuine Swedish gothic" (Sight & Sound). In Swedish with English subtitles.

Excellent film version of the book. Well directed, with good pacing. The two actors were excellent choices to represent "The Girl" and the "Reporter". After seeing this film I'm afraid to see the American version because it cannot be a better film.

Follows the book closely. Unlike a lot of modern movies, this one seemed to be made for viewers with attention spans longer than that of a gnat. Rapid scene shifting is kept to a minimum. In fact some scenes, especially where violence is taking place, are too protracted. Kept my interest, though, until just before the end when Lisbeth came flying in on her motorcycle to save Blomqvist. It was as corny as horse soldiers swooping in just before closing credits to rescue a wagon train from the Indians. Been there, seen that.
