Synopsis

In an Oscar-nominated role he deserved to win, Woody Harrelson plays Capt. Tony Stone, a career Army man whose alcoholism has relegated him to breaking the worst news imaginable to the wives and parents of fallen soldiers in Iraq. His stoic demeanor and proper decorum can barely contain all his demons, as new trainee Ben Foster, an Iraq War hero, gradually discovers. This tense character study yields to the pressures of melodrama when Woody sidesteps protocol to "console" a widow (Samantha Morton), but The Messenger wins overall for the strength of its writing, performances, and emotional wisdom. Marks the directorial debut of Oren Moverman, the screenwriter of I'm Not There. Co-starring Jena Malone, Eamonn Walker, and Steve Buscemi.
