Facets keeps emailing me asking to review this movie. There is no option on the 0-5 scale for "Did not see". The DVD I received was cracked and would not play in my machine, so I sadly did not see the movie. I returned the DVD and noted on the "Returned DVD" web page that it was cracked and unplayable and that I would like a different, intact and playable copy sent, but I guess my responses thereon were not received or recorded.

Coco Before Chanel is a beautiful film supported by excellent acting. Fontaine explores the early life of Gabrielle "coco" Chanel with all its losses and triumphs, reliefs and tragedies. Coco is at times immature and hard-headed, but never fails to stick to her beliefs and sensibilities. She begins to understand her own unique style as she subtly progresses 20th century style away from extravagance towards elegance and simplicity.

I loved this film. I think it clearly explains why Coco's style was so different from her contemporary French couturiers. Her love for Boy, and English bon vivant, made her sensitive to the English style, specially to the influence of the "blue-stockings". She ended up creating with French flair but the essence is English, with dark clothes, dumping the "hourglass" figure and excess jewelry. The film is not moralistic but it does show that Coco's indifference to moral restrains at the time turned her into a "self-made" woman, completely indifferent to what others would say. However, she did take chances. In a way, she was a very lucky person, and with a lot of talent. Definitely, this is a period film that portrays the social disarray that pervaded in Europe after the war.

Pleasant costumer about early life and romances of Coco Chanel focusing on life of upper class in France, though she was a poor orphan. Little re-design business.
