Synopsis

For this self-reflexive, funny noir romance, writer-director Pedro Almodovar turned to Penelope Cruz to act as the centerpiece in a melodramatic tale of a blind, one-time movie director (Lluis Homar) who reflects on his past love affair with an aspiring actress (Cruz) and the vengeful producer (Jose Luis Gomez) he stole her from. If you're seeking a tangled narrative that jumps back and forth in time, gorgeously packed mise-en-scene, film references galore, great camerawork and greater acting, then you need to see Broken Embraces, Almodovar's biggest film to date. Nominated for the Golden Palm at Cannes. In Spanish with English subtitles.

I am a big fan of Almodovar films - I don't think I've seen one I didn't like. That said, 'Broken Embraces' is a tough call for me. The script is good. The acting is good - Penelope Cruz is wonderful in the hands of Almodovar. What's broken about 'Broken Embraces' is this film is almost a parody of Almodovar's film making. It's a film within a film within a film. It's not confusing, Almodovar does a good job distinguishing between the three films. What it is is a parlor game without any fun.
