Synopsis

For over a decade, Quentin Tarantino plotted an homage to freewheeling war movies of old like The Dirty Dozen. When it came time to finally bring his bulging script for a spaghetti WWII story to the screen, Tarantino supposedly got Brad Pitt so drunk he couldn't refuse the starring role of Lt. Aldo Raine. His mission: lead a band of Jewish bastards into occupied France to collect Nazi scalps. "Energetic, inventive, swaggering fun...rich in fantasy and blithely amoral" (J. Hoberman, Village Voice). With Melanie Laurent, Eli Roth, Diane Kruger, B.J. Novak, Mike Myers, and Christoph Waltz, who won the Best Actor prize at Cannes for his uber-villainous role.

Quentin Tarantino---USA/Germany---2009---153 mins.

UGH. PATHETIC. TARANTINO ALTERNATES BETWEEN SLAVERING AND WINKING IN THIS BORING, DELIBERATELY REPULSIVE FILM. IS THIS IRONY? NAZIS ARE GHASTLY SO AN AMERICAN FILM MAKER, 60 YEARS LATER, CAN BE REPULSIVE TOO. WHERE IS THE DISTANCE THAT SMART FILM-MAKING NEEDS.

Warm Fuzzies: The locations and scene direction were great. The period uniforms and wardrobe were great. The authenticity of the scenes were realistic. Cold Pricklies: I understand the story is a fantasy. But there were too many improbable situations to the point of being hokey. For example Brad Pitt being allowed to run around the lobby of the theatre with Hitler in attendance without any security in the lobby. Also being Italian film critiques and not speaking fluent Italian and getting away with that. I think the "Bastards" where a bunch of thugs. If you are going to fight a heinous enemy one should hold a higher moral ground. Scalping and mutilation? Also Brad Pitts Tennessee accent was way over the top.
