Synopsis

Nora Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle) directs this delightful film that bounces back in forth from 1940s Paris to present-day New York City. On one hand, you have Meryl Streep playing a young version of star cook Julia Child, visiting the City of Lights for the first time and experimenting with its cuisine. Flash forward 60 years, and blogger Julie Powell (Amy Adams) has taken on the task of cooking one recipe per evening from Child's canonical cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, all while juggling a day job and marriage (to Chris Messina). Based on Powell's memoir about the experience, as well as Child's My Life in France. Featuring Stanley Tucci. Nora Ephron---USA---2009---123 mins.

I can't decide whether Meryl Streep is a good actress or just a great mimic. Anyway, she did make a human being out of a celebrity I had always regarded as a caricature. Unfortunately, the movie dragged when Streep wasn't on screen. Incidentally going over that Paul Child got rang true. The Department of State during the McCarthy was an awful place to work.

What a disappointment! Bad art direction, bad casting, bad acting, bad camera, bad lighting, full of cliches, superficial, no sensitivity. I loved the book My Life in France, admire Julia Child's drive, like Meryl Streep. But even she felt too fake. Both her and Julie's husbands were simply awful; Julie was the only one who was (just) OK. The friends' lunch - could you possibly put more cliches in one scene? Nora Ephron failed in every aspect.
