Synopsis

An unsuccessful poet is finally published and praised when he is mistakenly thought to have died. The poet manages to escape and has the opportunity to claim his rightful recognition, but in a world of such intense corruption and hypocrisy, is it worth it? Guru Dutt directed, wrote and stars in this masterpiece of Indian cinema. In Hindi with English subtitles.

This film has managed to remain in the imagination of Indians and to keep its rank among the best films of all times. To today's viewers it will seem awkward and corny (as if US films from the past were never awkward or corny) but its cinematography is especially well done for the post war era. It's the story of a poor, struggling, misunderstood poet who is befallen by just every stroke of bad fortune. The women in his life, both with eyes averted down and dupattas up, are characters of their time. He loves both, but in different ways. The more unlikely one, a prostitute, gets him in the end because she truly values his art. They literally go walking off hand-in-hand into the sunset as The End flashes. A bonus treat in the film is Johnny Walker's skillful antics as the savvy clown. His songs are hummed with affection by Indians still today.
