Synopsis

The artistic crime of the century. That's what people said about Philippe Petit's illegal, not to mention insane, tightrope walk between the twin towers of the World Trade Center on August 7, 1974. Although he was arrested and taken for psychiatric evaluation, his feat was a dancing success, as is this Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning documentary from James Marsh (Wisconsin Death Trip). In addition to filming reenactments and interviewing Petit and associates about the planning, the event, and the aftermath, Marsh also incorporates the French daredevil's own footage captured back in 1974. "Thorough, understated and altogether enthralling" (The New York Times).

This was exciting.. A remarkable stunt. The film shows the logistical challenges and dangers of planning to walk between the Twin towers in high winds. Just getting access to the roof was as exciting as a caper movie. Ya gotta see this movie. Richard

How do you make a documentary in 2008 about events that happened in 1974 in a location (New York's late lamented World Trade Center) that no longer exists? You take what older footage and still photographs there are (mostly from TV coverage) and combine it with present day commentary from the participants. Wire walker Phillipe Petit is a very charismatic personality, so this works rather well. It's also nice to see footage of the Twin Towers that doesn't show a plane crashing into them (back then they were just being built). But oh, what a film could have been made if in 1974 a major documentary filmmaker had chosen to cover this live. I'm reminded of Gualtiero Jacopetti, who made MONDO CANE and other Mondo type shock docs but also filmed the sadly forgotten tribute to the city, ONLY ONE NEW YORK, whose only Chicago exhibition was on a one day double bill at the old Clark Theater two years after its initial release. Someone please put that one on a DVD if it can even be found anymore.
