Synopsis

The debut fiction film from Iranian filmmaker Hana Makhmalbaf, sister of Samira and daughter of Mohsen, is imbued with her clan's eye for visual poetry and concern for human dignity. It tells the allegorical tale of a six-year old girl living in the Afghan town of Bamian. Amidst the rubble of Buddha statues still left by the Taliban in 2001, the girl grapples with a conflict that practically comes as a birthright to Western children--she wants to go to school. "A deeply affecting but wholly unaffected picture, truthful and unsentimental" (Philip French, Observer). Winner of the Crystal Bear and the Peace Film Award at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival. In Farsi with English subtitles. NOTE: This rental is a PAL DVD and requires a REGION FREE DVD player to operate.
