Synopsis

This set combines two timeless, borderless masterpieces by Akira Kurosawa and his trusty thespian, Toshiro Mifune. The director's first full-length comedy, Yojimbo stars Mifune as the unemployed samurai warrior who comes to a small village torn apart by two warring factions. "Explosively comic and exhilarating," said Pauline Kael. Mifune returns to help a group of very earnest, very green, very young samurai rid their clan of corruption in Sanjuro. As in Yojimbo, much of the comic effect comes from imaginative composition and incongruous movement. In Japanese with English Akira Kurosawa---Japan---1961/1962---206 mins.

This movie hardly needs my praise in 2017. But yes: more than half a century on, it is every bit as fresh and inventive as upon its revolutionary release.

An exceptional film. Dramatic and violent, yet comic. Clearly gives rise to thoughts of Clint Eastwood's later portrayals of a similar character. Very realistic in feel. Excellent in black and white, no need for color. Very informative commentary follows on the Criterion version. I'm looking forward to watching the sequel, Sanjuro.

Each time I view this film I see something new. It has a Zen equanimity theme (rising above the fray), an American Western theme (how to be the hero on the lawless frontier), a political theme (the total self-interest of business), a family values theme (dont join the gamblers, son), a modernity theme (the gun) and on -- with a counterpuntal sound track, nuanced imagery. No wonder Sergio Leone stole it.

Easy to see how this movie was influenced by Westerns and in turn influenced later Westerns: dusty town with big showdown. Technically brilliant B&W photography but the story does not seem particularly original - maybe it was in its time. Not as gripping as Seven Samurai or as engaging as more recent samurai films such as Twilight Samurai but still worthwhile. Make sure to watch the extra feature about the filming of the movie: fascinating look into the creativity and ingenuity of Kurosawa and his cameramen.
