Synopsis

In this Spike Lee film, you anticipate the stance the controversial director will have on the response (or lack thereof) of the Bush administration to Hurricane Katrina. You know figures like New Orleans Mayor Nagin will be cast in a heroic light and that Dick Cheney, Homeland Security, and FEMA will form the unholy trinity. For the most part, this is common knowledge. What will alarm you is the sheer power of this epic documentary, constructed partially of footage of the catastrophe and talking head commentary by experts, but relying heavily on the harrowing first-hand accounts of survivors. People who lost their homes, their loved ones, and were abandoned by the time of the next hurricane season. "The sheer volume of suffering and misery chronicled by the film is crushing" (Stephen Holden, The New York Times). Spike Lee---USA---2006---255 mins.
