Synopsis

Agnes Varda's extraordinarily bleak account of a young woman''s death and life. In a breathtaking performance, Sandrine Bonnaire (La Ceremonie) is Mona, a waif who drops out of Parisian society to wander the southwest French countryside, exploring the open spaces and implicit freedom absent in her life. In the opening scene, her body is discovered frozen. Varda expertly recounts her life, carefully dissecting French society. Winner, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actress, L.A. Film Critics Association. In French with Agnes Varda---France---1985---105 mins.

Let's be frank. I didn't like Vagabond. How could I? It's the dead end of road movies, bleak, despairing. You can't even say that the vagabond's fate is tragic since she didn't seem to have any redeeming qualities. When given opportunities to improve her lot she rejects them to pursue some vague goal of freedom. Her's is the longest suicide ever filmed. Nevertheless, Vagabond is spellbinding. It kept me riveted to my chair.
