Offhand I can think of quite a few movies about obsessive love: Mad love, Vincere, :Gabbeh, Prick up your ears and on and on. Each film tackles the condition from a different angle, carrying a torch, revenge, disillusion, mental derangement....... Adele's decline into madness is slow, tragic and seemingly inevitable. Although it drags at times, Adele kept my interest to the end, partially because of the off stage presence of Victor Hugo, a man who conquered the world of letters but couldn't seem to rescue his daughter from her delusion.

After watching this, I pondered who the target audience might have been and had some difficulty coming up with an answer. As the story of the daughter of V Hugo descending into obsession, self-delusion, and finally madness it has little commercial value, is only a sidenote to history, and imparts no great message. Ultimately, it is a consolation film for parents whose children have gone wrong, in that it shows that such disasters can happen even to the famous, and has some value as a very thin psychological study. Aside from watching for those reasons, or as a Truffaut fan, I wouldn't bother with this. The acting itself was excellent, and aside from a slow pace in a later scene, Truffaut did an excellent job of directing what is ultimately a weak story, which is why it rose to a 2 rating instead of a 0. IMDB viewer reviews are universally glowing, which to me is an even more fascinating view into the possibilities of strange obsessions that can creep into the human mind.
