Synopsis

Though there was a massive stir after images first leaked of terror suspects being abused and tortured by US Army guards at Abu Ghraib prison back in 2003, Oscar-winning documentarian Errol Morris wants to make sure no one forgets it. Or more importantly, who's to blame. Landing interviews with the American MPs who were charged in the scandal, the resounding message of Standard Operating Procedure is that superiors with purposefully vague orders are more culpable than the misguided scapegoats who were actually indicted. "Disturbing, analytical and morose" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). Winner of the Silver Berlin Bear Jury Grand Prix at the 2008 Berlin Film Errol Morris---USA---2008---116 mins.

Important message, but not well presented. Having "witnesses" speak while another narrative was playing in the subtitles was hard for me to follow. Also, "witnesses" present only one side of the story . I tend to believe them, and I realize that defenders of the actions taken at Abu Ghraib are not likely to subject themselves to Morris' grilling, Still, it would be nice if the documentary were more balanced. What really bothered me, though, was the lack of passion. What happened at Abu Ghraib was horrible. Where was the outrage? All we got at the end was an admonition to "read the book". That seemed like a tacit admission that the likelihood of the real criminals being tried runs from zero to less than zero.
