I doubt that I have much to add, considering the reams of paper that have already been devoted to this film. I do note that, on a second viewing, the deeply felt humanism of Bergman is in full flower here, despite the subject matter. Also amazed that Van Sydow was only 26 when he acted in this.

First Bergman film I've ever watched. Beautiful B&W cinematography; surreal, medieval Scandinavian tale and humor. Reminded me of some of Fellini's films, but more dour and without the Mediterranean "dolce vita". Scandinavian humor is apparently much darker and...different. Never had any idea how strikingly handsome the young Max Von Sydow was. Ultimately an existential story of man's ability to choose his own fate, preserve his sense of right and, in so doing, trick death, and assert a measure of personal freedom.

The Grim Reaper is fast. Yet the editing allows the eye to adjust, linking Europe to America. Numerous characters, variety, but not extensive complication to not keep you focused. Bergman films from the early 50's to the 70's are an excellent introduction to "art cinema". The struggles are between the individuals and the circumstances, including the rise of television, art pressures, and encroaching development.

One of the best movies ever produced. Powerful message transmitted without any cheesy special effects. A must see
