Synopsis

Maggie Gyllenhaal stars in this offbeat romantic drama about a young secretary who has an extremely close relationship with her boss. After a brief spell in an institution, Lee (Gyllenhaal) emerges in need of a job to occupy the hours of the day that she doesn't spend cutting herself. She is hired as a secretary in the office of the ruthless, uncompromising attorney, E. Edward Grey (James Spader). Lee slowly begins to thrive on the abuse that her anal boss dishes out and, after a spanking incident, they begin a torrid sadomasochistic fling with unusual results. Gyllenhaal''s innocently erotic portrayal of a woman addicted to pain is stunningly perfect. Secretary won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. "A groundbreaking new comedy" (Stephen Holden, The New York Times). Steven Shainberg---USA---2002---112 mins.

A strange film. I had a difficult time figuring how I should rate it. I think the outline of the story - the plot - easily could have warranted a higher rating. The acting, especially Maggie G., is decent. And the film does manage (barely) to engage my sympathies for the protagonists. But once again, it falls apart at the end with yet another Hollywood ending. If you're going to make a creepy movie about creepy characters, you got to play it all the way.

This was the movie that put Maggie Gyllenhaal onto the list of stars to watch, as well as giving semi forgotten 70's actor Stephen McHattie a comeback of a sort. It;s weird and kinky but kind of interesting. And don't invite these people to work in your office.
