Synopsis

The inspiration for Night Tide is the last stanza of Poe's "Annabel Lee." A young sailor on leave (Dennis Hopper) falls in love with an orphan girl posing as a mermaid in a California seafront show. Because of childhood fears which remain in her subconscious, she believes that she really is a mermaid. Raymond Durgnat wrote, "A collector''s piece for connoisseurs of the offbeat340One is strongly reminded of Fritz Lang, of Aldrich''s Kiss Me Deadly, of Charles Laughton''s Night of the Hunter340.A classically beautiful example of screen expressionism reconciled with realistic locales. " Curtis Harrington---USA---1961---82 mins.
