Synopsis

At age 81, Eric Rohmer embraced the digital era in a most impressive fashion with this highly ambitious historical drama. Based on Grace Elliott's journals of her life in Paris during the French Revolution, the film depicts the violence of warfare and political upheaval against the story of Elliott''s relationship with Prince Philippe, the Duke of Orleans. In one of his rare period pieces, Rohmer boldly uses paintings and other historical illustrations as the backdrop his actors walk through. Best known for his realism and natural lighting, here Rohmer creates the past entirely in the studio. His novel use of the new technology is worlds removed from the fantasy "reality" of Hollywood''s CGI spectacles. "The movie''s look is authentic, but--as suits an epoch that predates photography--in no way naturalistic...Rohmer has contrived a glorious Melies effect..." (J. Hoberman, Village Voice). In Eric Rohmer---France---2001---129 mins.
