Like the inoperable patient approaching death in the opening scene, the marriage of this playboy writer and his neglected wife seems destined for an inexorable painful death. But not before we get to watch it flicker out over one long interminable night. Luckily, the cinematography is wonderful, and Monica Vitti lights up the screen in this central film of Antonioni's esteemed informal trilogy of love behaving or failing badly. The trilogy would be the perfect rental for lonely valentines come February!
