Synopsis

Nobuo Nakagawa's shockingly visceral Japanese horror film is a disturbing descent into the bowels of hell. When a theology student hits and kills a drunk passerby with his car, he''s ravaged by a guilty conscience. The young man''s nightmarish journey eventually carries him to the gates of the underworld, where he''s subjected to a wide array of brutally creative, graphically violent tortures. "A thoroughly disturbing widescreen vision of hell by the director once critically anointed as the Japanese Alfred Hitchcock" (L.A. Weekly). In Japanese with English subtitles. Nobuo Nakagawa---Japan---1960---101 mins.

This distinctly Japanese vision of crime, punishment, and hell is definitely not for every taste. Boasting great visuals and excellent use of color, this film could, nonetheless, give some people nightmares.
