Perhaps Eisenstein should have quit while he was ahead with the relatively upbeat Part 1. Part 2 paints a much darker picture of Ivan's, and by implication, Stalin's regime and its purges. Although the film ends with a rousing call to the Russian people to expel foreign enemies, i.e. "the great patriotic war", that ploy didn't get Eisenstein off the hook. Part 2 was banned. Part 3 was never completed. Something that puzzled me was the lack of crowd scenes, from the master of mass movement. Nevertheless, like Part 1, Part 2 is filled with striking images. If nothing else, reinforces Delmore Schwart'z observation the "Even paranoids have enemies."
