Synopsis

Ivan the Terrible, Part 1 (1944, 99 mins.): A landmark project in all respects and one of the boldest achievements of Russian cinema. In this first part of a dramatic account of the first Russian Czar, Viand Groszy faces treachery within his own family and fights ruthlessly to maintain his power. Prokofiev's stunning score adds to the grandeur of Eisenstein's loaded mise-en-scene.

Sidelong glances that foretell evil, lingering profile shots, exaggerated gestures, long poses, almost like a silent film Who needs dialog? Chinese writers of the Qing dynasty who wanted to criticize contemporary society had to set their tales in previous dynasties and pretend that they were fables. Did Eisenstein use the same ploy?. Implied criticism of Stalin, but also a rallying call in the "great patriotic war:. Politics aside, a riveting film.
